Golden Gai Cover Charges: Prices & How to Budget
What does a night in Golden Gai cost? Read bars' posted charges, calculate a one- or two-stop budget, and know what to ask before taking a seat.
Golden Gai has no single bar-hopping price. For each stop, add the cover charge, your drinks and any separately stated extras. A ¥1,000 cover plus two ¥800 drinks comes to ¥2,600 before extras. That is a budgeting example, not a quote from a particular bar. Check the charges before taking a seat.
The Golden Gai association’s visitor guide explains that many bars charge an entry or otoshi fee separately from drinks. The practical question is what your chosen bar charges and includes.
What does a Golden Gai cover charge include?
A cover is a separate part of the bill; do not assume the first drink is included. Some bars describe a charge alongside an otoshi—a small appetizer or snack. Ask whether that dish is included in the stated charge or billed separately.

A ¥700 drink on a menu may therefore be only one part of the cost of a stop. Read the charge line as well as the drink list.
What official bar menus show
We read the following operator pages on September 18, 2026. These are examples of published pricing structures, not a survey of current prices across Golden Gai. Kouro’s menu is dated April 18, 2024; the other two price sections do not give a clear revision date. Confirm the evening’s terms directly.

These examples show why one district-wide price can mislead. A starting drink price, a dated menu and a conditional cover are different kinds of information. None of these three price sections clearly establishes both tax treatment and a minimum order, so we do not fill those gaps with assumptions.

How much should you budget for one or two bars?
Use the menu you confirm at each stop. The examples below assume a ¥1,000 cover per person per bar and ¥800 per drink, with no included drink. They are arithmetic examples, not venue quotes or a recommended amount to drink.

In these examples, two drinks across two bars cost ¥1,000 more than two drinks in one bar because there is another cover. Actual covers, included items and drink prices can differ between stops.

Five questions to ask before sitting down
You can show the Japanese text if speaking it is difficult. Ask before ordering, while it is easy to choose another venue.

If an unfamiliar item appears on the bill, point to it and ask 「これは何の料金ですか？」—“What is this charge for?” Asking for an explanation is more useful than guessing that every extra item is an otoshi.
Do you need cash? What about no-cover bars?
Check each bar’s payment policy. For example, red.’s operator lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express and Diners cards, while saying electronic money is not accepted. That is one venue’s policy, not a promise about other bars. Have a payment method your chosen venue accepts before ordering.
No cover does not mean free drinks. Check the drink prices, minimum order and any other stated charges. If a waiver has conditions, confirm they apply to your visit. An older directory’s “no charge” label is not a guarantee for tonight.
A low price also does not establish that a bar is accepting new guests. GO TOKYO notes that some Golden Gai bars are members only. Ask whether walk-ins are welcome and seats are available before discussing the bill.
