Golden Gai Photography Rules: Photos, Video & Permission
Can you take photos in Golden Gai? Check the associations' rules for private alleys, bar interiors and planned shoots, plus phrases for asking permission.
Get permission before taking photos or video in Golden Gai’s alleys. The district association explains that the lanes are private paths and require approval from the relevant administration. Inside a bar, ask that business separately. A seat, a drink purchase or an open door is not permission to photograph the district.
For a visit centered on drinks, choose a welcoming bar and enjoy the evening without making photography the condition of a good stop. Our Golden Gai bar guide helps with that choice; this page explains what to check before bringing out a camera.
Where do you need permission?
| What you want to photograph | What to check first |
|---|---|
| An alley or street scene | Approval from the association responsible for that area |
| A close-up of a bar’s sign | The district’s photography conditions still apply |
| The interior of one bar | That bar’s permission and any limits it sets |
| A planned photo or video shoot | The relevant association’s application, approved area and fees |
The Japanese photography notice explicitly includes scenery and close-ups of signs. It also separates a bar’s interior permission from the district’s process. Ask which approval covers the photograph you want, rather than treating one person’s yes as permission for every location.
Does using a phone make it okay?
Do not assume a casual phone photo is exempt. The English visitor rules require approval for photography and video without giving a general smartphone exception. Our practical advice is to check before shooting, even if it is only a quick souvenir picture or a short social-media clip.
An image you have seen online does not tell you what permission its photographer had. If you cannot establish that your shot is allowed, put the camera away and continue your visit.
Taking a photo inside a bar
Ask staff about the specific shot: your drink, the decor or your group. Make it easy for them to decline. As a courtesy, ask anyone who would be recognizable in the picture too, and avoid including other customers in the background.
Keep the request separate from the bill. Our cover-charge and budget guide explains what to confirm before taking a seat; paying a cover does not establish photography approval.
Planning a shoot in advance
The association’s photography notice describes an advance proposal, a permission armband and a fee schedule. Depending on the location, approval from two associations may be needed. Its published photography fees are not a visitor entrance ticket.
The Shinjuku Sanko Shotengai association’s application page identifies Akarui Hanazono Ichibangai as an area requiring applications to both associations. It also requires its permit number to appear when permitted material is used on social media. Check the approved area and publication conditions, as well as permission to take the shot.
Before booking a shoot or promising a filming location, send a clear plan through the contact route on the official notice. We suggest including:
- The exact location, date and time you have in mind.
- Still photos, video or both, and where you intend to publish them.
- The number of people and equipment you would bring.
- Whether you also want to film inside an individual bar.
Ask the association to confirm the correct application, current price and scope of approval for your plan. A photography tour’s booking page alone does not establish that those arrangements have been made.
Useful questions to show staff
These phrases help start a conversation; they are not a permit.
| English | Japanese |
|---|---|
| May I take a photo inside this bar? | 店内で写真を撮ってもいいですか? |
| May I photograph just my drink? | 自分の飲み物だけ撮ってもいいですか? |
| May I post this photo on social media? | この写真をSNSに載せてもいいですか? |
| Who should I ask about photography permission? | 撮影許可はどこに問い合わせればいいですか? |
If the answer is no or unclear, leave the camera away. Keep doorways clear while asking and let staff attend to their customers.
What was checked
We read the four association pages below on September 24, 2026. This is a guide to their published rules, not a report of obtaining a permit or testing how rules are enforced in person. Confirm any arrangements directly before your visit.
For dinner before drinks, see Omoide Yokocho vs Golden Gai. Photography conditions need checking for each location you visit.
